Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Lacey Foust, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Ridgemere, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Creating a Warm First Impression

A successful move-in experience begins with making sure each new resident feels welcomed from the very start. That welcome includes support from a welcoming committee, introductions to management team members and their departments, and thoughtful connections with residents who share similar interests.

These early introductions help new residents know who is available to support them and where they can turn with questions. Just as importantly, they help residents begin building relationships with neighbors who can make the community feel familiar and comfortable.

Resident Ambassadors play an important role in creating that sense of warmth. Each ambassador prepares a typed welcome letter to share with new residents. The letters introduce the ambassadors, welcome the new resident to the community, and include contact information so the new resident knows they can reach out with questions.

Going Above and Beyond for New Neighbors

Sometimes the simplest gestures make the biggest difference. At Ridgemere, one meaningful way ambassadors welcome someone new is by personally sharing their letters. This small act creates an immediate connection and reminds new residents that someone is already thinking of them.

Ambassadors also help new residents feel included by inviting them to sit at their table for meals or join activities that match their interests. These invitations can ease the uncertainty of walking into a dining room or event for the first time. Instead of wondering where to go or who to sit with, new residents have a friendly face ready to welcome them.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because ambassadors help them feel genuinely welcome. That peer-to-peer connection can feel especially reassuring during a major transition. Ambassadors understand community life from a resident’s perspective, and their encouragement can help new neighbors feel more confident as they settle in.

Resident Ambassadors shape the culture of the community through their positive attitudes and willingness to help. They go above and beyond because they care about new residents and want to see the community thrive. Through their kindness, they help create a place where people feel supported, included, and ready to call Ridgemere home.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
